Chest Pain Caused By Stress

Stress refers to the way an individual reacts after a threat to their balance or when something or someone upsets or threatens them. Experiencing stress is usually normal. When one senses any form of danger, whether imaginary or real, the defenses in the body respond through the flight or fight reaction also known as stress response. The body offers you protection through the stress response. It helps one to remain focused, alert and energetic. The stress response also helps you to face challenges. When stress reaches a certain point, it becomes detrimental to your relationship, productivity, mood and health.

When one experiences pains in the chest, it does not necessarily indicate a health problem. Excruciating chest pains could be scary as this could be a sign of physical ailment, anxiety, heartburn or heart attack. People with heart attacks normally experience chest pains. It is therefore important for you to differentiate all the above for ease of mind. Nausea, dizziness, sweating and short breaths accompany heart attacks. On the contrary, heartburn will feel like a sharp or burning pain in the abdomen, chest and neck. One also feels like a portion of food has lodged in the throat.

A person could experience chest pains due to other reasons. This could be due to other ailments related to heart conditions. Some of the reasons include aortic dissection, pericarditis, coronary spasm and angina. Aortic dissection occurs after the wall lining in the aorta bursts open. When muscles located in the wall lining of the artery constrict temporarily and briefly, these results to a coronary spasm. An angina takes place after a part of the heart receives minimal blood. Pericarditis refers to the swelling of the pocket sac that surrounds the outer part of the heart. Other causes of chest pain include pneumonia, asthma and hiatal hernia.

One of the most common causes of chest pains is recurring stress. Chest pain from stress makes one feel like a heavy load sitting on their chest. In some people, the pain persists for years. The pain eventually causes them to fear incidences like death and become anxious and lethargic. Women and men who experience chest pains are due to stress levels from individual lives or places of work. However, depression and anxiety are the main causes of chest pains in women. Effects of anxiety and stress go beyond experiencing pains in the chest. They include stomach upsets, rapid heartbeat and tension in the muscles. Some of these effects could relate to heart ailments hence the need to see a doctor for evaluation.

In order to prevent chest pains, it is important to manage your levels of stress. Cut down on your work and home schedules to a manageable amount. Have some time for relaxing by setting priorities to your time. Examples of activities that help to manage stress include yoga, meditation, exercise and talking to fellow workmates and friends. Beware of any negative thinking and change them often.

It is difficult to handle stress on your own. It may lead to other problems making it hard to manage. It is advisable to seek counseling or take medication to control it.
