THE CAPE GOOSEBERRY FRUIT

The Cape Gooseberry from the first impression looks like a yellow egg yolk that seems to be encased in some paper like leaves. Cape Gooseberry as it is referred to in countries such as in South Africa and originally from South America and native to Brazil is a small and cherry sized, yellow fleshed intriguing berry that looks like a miniature orange fruit that is loosely enclosed in a papery husk or in a cape to help in its storage as well as to offer it a protection. Its botanical name is known as Physalis Peruviana and belongs to the nightshade family of plants which consists of tomatoes, potatoes This fruit looks more or less like a tomattila fruit, although smaller in size.

Gooseberry some times referred to as ground-cherry is common and widely cultivated in countries such as in South Africa, New Zealand as well as in Australia where its significance is so pronounced as they are used to manufacture jams and pies. They actually make beautiful and marvelous garnishes. What of their taste? With these fruit having a ripe like an appearance with a richer and a yellowish look,the gooseberries, however, they taste very sweet which makes it very suitable for the preparation of fruit salads, pies as well as in jams. They contain numerous tiny seeds which are barely noticeable anyway.

 

However, remember that all the parts of the Cape Gooseberry plant except the fruit part are poisonous. To which the acts as a supper food component from the various nutrients that it contains such as vitamin A,C,B1,B2,B6 and B12 plus it is still very rich in phosphorous not to mention that almost 16 percent of this fruit contain proteins.The characteristics of these fruit makes it become very helpful in relishing various fruit salads, to which it can best be combined with an avocado. Plus the fruit’s decorative appearance makes this fruit to be very popular as an exotic garnish for deserts in the restaurants.

Studies however indicate that Cape gooseberry offers lots of health and nutritional benefits that is from its constituents such as poly-phenols and carotenoids which tend to offer anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties thus very significant in treating or in the prevention of the lung cancer. It also contains mineral properties such as carbohydrates,fats, protein, calcium, iron, phosphorous, ascorbic acid, pectin ,carotene as well as vitamin. Other properties of this fruit indicates that it provides prevention against conditions such as diabetes and hypertension mechanism while its withalonides components offers an anti cancer properties. Physalis peruviana or the Cape Gooseberry extract have medicinal value which helps to treat diseases such as cancer,asthma,hepatitis,dermatitis,malaria well as leukemia. In other places the Cape Gooseberry is used as a remedy for conditions such as fevers,coughs, sore throat as well as for abscesses.

Another quality about the Cape Gooseberry is the fact that they can be very long lasting such, to which these fresh fruits can be stored in some scaled containers and in a dry atmosphere hence staying in a proper and in a well condition for a very long period of time before being used.
